E-mail Spam Blocking - June 4, 2004

We have implemented a new form of spam blocking that is completely within the Internet Standards (RFCs) for SMTP mail systems. With it, we have seen a remarkable drop off of spam getting through and have been able to relax some of the retrictions that we were forced to implement to keep our mail server running.

If you get reports of someone not being able to send e-mail to you at our server, please give us their e-mail address immediately so that we can research the problem in our logs. You should now be able to get e-mail from all valid e-mail servers on the Internet that are standards compliant.

E-mail Status - April 20, 2004

Recently, we have been recieving huge amounts of attempted SPAM e-mails. At times we were receiving 500-1000 e-mails per minute. This load was causing huge amounts of load on our mail server mail.n2.net. As a result it was causing problems for most of our customers trying to get or send e-mail. We were forced to take steps to solve the problem that appear to be helping.

We added an extra outgoing mail server smtp.n2.net that can be used by our customers connected through our dialup lines or dsl connections. You can use this server by setting your outgoing e-mail server to smtp.n2.net in the configuration of your mail program.

Since most spammers are falsifying their source, they ususally do not follow the Internet Standards and give an invalid name of their mail server in the mail (SMTP) protocol. We added a restriction that requires incoming e-mail to be from a mail server that follows the Internet Standards and provides a valid server name that has a valid IP address. Unfortunately, this has blocked a few e-mails from legitimate servers that are incorrectly configured. If you get reports that someone you know is unable to send you e-mail, please contact us immediately and we will try to help resolve this issue. You will need to know their e-mail address so that we can search for an entry in our recent mail logs.

E-mail Virus - March 8, 2004

There is an e-mail virus known as Beagle that looks like it comes from your ISP (N2 Networking System Administrator). It looks very official and talks about excessive e-mail use or other subjects and has an attachment. Do NOT open the attachment. If it is a valid e-mail notice from N2 Networking, it will never contain an attachment.

E-mail Virus - January 26, 2004

There is a new e-mail virus going around today. It is sent as a zipped attachment. Do NOT open any attachments that you do not know exactly what they are.

Domain Registrations from N2 Networking - December 1, 2002

We are now able to register or renew domains for $20/year. If you would like to transfer your domain to us, you can do so by e-mailing the request to support@n2.net, or calling us at (858) 694-8540. If you plan to transfer your domain to us, you should start about a month or two in advance to allow for any problems that may be encountered. Transfering your domain to us will not make you lose any registration time that you already have, but will instead add on to it.

SPAM Filtering Now Available - October 4, 2002

Last night, we installed a new E-Mail server.

The new e-mail server can filter all e-mail for SPAM (unsolicited commercial e-mail). It will not stop all SPAM e-mail, but it appears to catch about 95% of the SPAM e-mail. The SPAM will be put in a special folder (junkmail) that you can check to make sure that wanted e-mail was not classified as spam.

As with all e-mail filtering, it is possible that some e-mail that you wanted may get incorrectly classified as SPAM. We will help you tune the spam filter to keep this from happening, but we can NOT take responsibility for accidentally blocked e-mail.

If you would like to have SPAM filtering enabled, send an e-mail requesting the spam filtering to be enabled with your account name to support@n2.net.

New E-Mail Server - October 2, 2002

Tomorrow evening (October 3, 2002), our E-Mail server will be going offline for maintenance. This down time will begin between 9PM and midnight, and will take approximately 2 - 3 hours. The down time is so that we can bring our new E-Mail server with SPAM filtering online.

SPAM E-mail Problem - July 25, 2002

We realize that SPAM e-mail has gotten completely out of control. We are currently subscribed to a service that blocks known spammers and we are blocking most sites that have sent us spam in the past. Yet, too much spam is still getting through.

We will soon introduce a new mail server that will be able to block most spam. The server is up and running, but it is still has a few bugs to get worked out before we can put it into production. We will let you know when the new server is available and how to opt-in to the spam blocking.

As with all e-mail filtering, it is possible that some e-mail that you wanted may get incorrectly classified as SPAM. We will help you tune the spam filter to keep this from happening, but we can NOT take responsibility for accidentally blocked e-mail.
