In
1956 shipwright Frank Prothero launched a boat he had been working on
for six years. She was a 81' gaff-rigged topmast schooner, which he
built for his own use, a project undertaken to please no one but
himself. He named her Alcyone.
Alcyone sets eleven sails:
mainsail, foresail, staysail, jib, flying jib, main and fore gaff
topsails, fisherman, fore course, raffee and stunsail. These can be
raised in different combinations to suit various wind conditions. The
rigging is complex, but pleasingly logical, having evolved
pragmatically over the last two hundred years.
Licensed
Captains John "Sugar" Flanagan & Leslie McNish have
owned and operated Alcyone for twenty-two years. She is a
comfortable platform and can easily sail with 6 or more people.
Thursday Sail The Alcyone will be boarding from their dock in the Boat Haven Marina and will be ending up at the festival.
